Disability awareness camp held

“It is important for the disabled to be given an opportunity to also showcase their talents and have fun.”

Kwa-Thema – The City of Ekurhuleni Department of Sport, Recreation, Art and Culture partnered with the Kwa-Thema Disability Sport Club on Saturday for a disability sport awareness day.

The event included aerobics, wheelchair tennis and athletics and was held at the Kwa-Thema Stadium.
On the day, a soccer team to represent Gauteng at the Toyota Championships for the Physically Disabled taking place in March was selected.

National Disability Rights Awareness Month is celebrated annually in November until International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is observed on December 3.
The theme for this year is The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – Create and Realise an Inclusive Society Upholding Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Senior sports organiser from the City of Ekurhuleni Poppy Bhengu said this was done to promote interaction between able-bodied and disabled learners.
“It is important for the disabled to be given an opportunity to also showcase their talents and have fun.
“But more so, for them to interact with others,” said Bhengu.
