Lifeguards are also stationed at the facility to ensure safety.
The mayor said the drowning of children tends to spike during the swimming season due to a lack of basic swimming lessons for those in previously disadvantaged communities.
“We hope that through the learn-to-swim programmes, members of the community will undergo the free basic swimming lessons.

“We also hope the swimming facility will encourage the young people in the area to learn how to swim and take up the sport professionally.

Masina urged residents to refrain from vandalising the facilities and infrastructure to express their grievances.
“These facilities are meant to make our lives easy and ensure we don’t travel out of the area to access services.
“If there are issues, reach out to the local leaders or escalate them to the relevant authorities,” he added.
Ward 87 councillor Bongani Hlophe said he is happy that the facility has finally been handed over to the community.
“We want to see young people using it and picking up swimming skills,” he added.
