Payneville residents held hostage by sewage in yards

“After a week the problem started again. We were forced to report the matter again to the metro."

Payneville residents are trapped in their homes due to overflowing sewage from blocked drains.
This has been their reality for over two months.
Streams of sewage cover the grounds of most houses and the roads, especially along Mabokoboko and Ndamase streets.
Despite complaints to the municipality, nothing has been done to permanently remedy the situation.
Concerned resident Mpho Nkwe said two weeks ago some officials responded to their call but told him it will only be a temporary fix.

“The official told us the metro doesn’t have trucks to suck out the sewage and would have to rent them out and that this would take months.
“After a week the problem started again. We were forced to report the matter again to the metro,” he said.
Mpho added he was forced to dig a trench in his yard to allow the sewage to flow out into the street or it was going to seep through his doorway.

He added that they fear for their health and that of their children.
“We are forced to keep our windows and doors closed at all times to keep the smell out of the house.
“We have to carry our children out of the house and yard when they go to school to ensure they are not in contact with the smelly water covering our yard.
“We pay for services but are forced to live with the smell of human faeces,” he added.
City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said a team has been dispatched to the area to attend to the matter.
