Aspiring cricketers learn from professionals

She started her cricket journey at the age of 7 playing for Eastern Union before moving to the North West Dragon.

Kwa-Thema – Professional cricket player Tumelo Sekhukhune (23) is giving back to her community through teaching.
Sekhukhune was part of the KFC Mini-Cricket campaign which took place at Sakhelwe Primary School on May 13.

The campaign aimed to connect professionals with young aspirant cricketers.
She started her cricket journey at the age of seven playing for Eastern Union before moving to the North West Dragons.
She is a bowler for the national woman’s team.

“It makes me happy to be part of this campaign. For me this is home, this is where my cricket journey begun.
“It is always fulfilling to come back and help the young ones to develop their skills.
“To share my knowledge and experiences and seeing how excited they are about learning,” she explained.

According to Sekhukhune, cricket is all about mastering the basics such as learning how to hold the bat or a ball.
She is studying logistics and supply chain management at the University of Johannesburg.
Sekhukhune said challenges she encountered at the beginning of her career include finding the correct bra size and the right kit.
KFC Mini-Cricket coordinator for Eastern Cricket Julius Maziya explained cricket requires parents to be involved and that there are platforms available should they require being educated about the sport.

“As a product of this programme I can attest to the empowerment it provides young people.
“I was also fortunate to have supportive parents.
“Parental support is crucial, especially at the age these learners are,” he said.
He added that cricket gives players an opportunity to learn life skills.
