Training Ship Springs in danger of closing down

Right now, TS Springs is in danger of closing it’s doors forever unless new premises can be found.

The sea cadets of Training Ship Springs (TS Springs) have been a well-known and much-loved part of the Springs community since 1916.
In that time, hundreds of young adults, both boys and girls, have received maritime, occupational and life-skills training, which has stood them in good stead in their careers.
A large number of ex-cadets having gone on to serve fruitful careers in the SA Navy and other maritime organisations.

For many years the old Sea Cadet base on the corner of Zigzag Road and 9th Avenue, with its iconic ship’s gun at the front, was a well–known landmark until safety and security reasons forced the premises to be sold off in 2006.
Since then, TS Springs has led a Flying Dutchman type existence, with no home port.
Until recently, TS Springs made use of the Springs Central Scouts’ Scout Hall in Lodeyko.
However, due to a large number of sea cadets, these facilities have become inadequate for both the number of cadets and the facilities available.
“Although a very good relationship exists between the Scouts and the Sea Cadets, it has become impractical to continue sharing the Scout Hall.
“The introduction of the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020 meant that the sea cadets have not held a parade (meeting) or any activities since then, and subsequently have not been able to charge subs or raise funds to assist in hiring new premises.

“Right now, TS Springs is in danger of closing zit’s doors forever unless new premises can be found,” said officer commanding of TS Springs Lt Cdr Chris Hand.
He has put out an urgent plea to businesses and organisations with potentially suitable premises in Springs to help out with a temporary base whilst fund-raising efforts kick into gear to eventually build a new base.
Facilities are needed to enable the Sea Cadets to hold their weekly parades and other activities and events.
It must be large enough to accommodate the 104 cadets and officers, including suitable ablution facilities indoors in the event of bad weather, as well as an outdoor area large enough for training, drills, parades and even camping out.
Anyone who can help with premises, or even with a financial contribution towards finding premises, may contact Hand at 076 054 0825 or oc@tssprings.co.za
