First leg of township economy launches

The Township Tuckshop Economy movement opened its first tuck shop last Saturday in Majola Street.

Kwa-Thema – The Township Tuckshop Economy movement opened its first tuck shop on Saturday in Majola Street.
The public relations officer for the movement, Bongani Mfobela, explained its aim is to grow the township economy.
“We grew up with tuck shops being the force of our township economy.
“For some reason when democracy came into play we lost that, and up to this day I still do not understand how and why.

“As a movement we seek to reclaim that space, which we have seemingly been pushed out off.”
The movement is made up of community members.
“The movement is provincial and consists of 100 members from various areas.
“Each member contributed to raise capital to fund these small businesses.
“We are going to be opening numerous branches across the province every month,” he stated.
Mfobela added the struggle is around the economy, especially now more than ever.
“Before we can target the bigger market we thought why not start where we are.
“What we have seen is that well-established businesses are striving with us as their market.
“What that tells us is that there’s money among us.
“Therefore, why not come up with something which will ensure the money comes back to us and into our economy,” he said.

He said the aim is not to fight with anyone.
“We are simply entering the market to provide good quality products to our people, provide quality service and meet the needs of the community,” he added.
Mfobela said the movement will look into occupying the mining, farming and finance sector in the future.
