Youth trained in construction

Kwa-Thema – Unemployed youth in Kwatsaduza are gaining valuable skills needed for a career in the construction industry through an internship programme.
The 12-month programme, which started in August, is offered by Royal Projects based in Kwa-Thema Extension Three.

Construction assessor Frans Mphaka said they offer training in administration, legal and technical aspects of construction.
“We train them in the administration part of construction, which include finance and record-keeping.
“They are offered lessons in the technical part of construction, which includes bricklaying, building, drawings and road construction.

The students are gaining valuable skills in the internship programme.

“We also train them in the legal aspects, which includes the tendering system, payments certificates and specifications.
“After four months in class they are placed at construction sites where they do their practical work,” she said.
Programme manager Thandi Nkosi said the company decided to roll out the programme after identifying a high number of unemployed youth.
“We decided to share our skills in empowering them to be better armed to compete for employment opportunities.

“We absorb young people from the age of 18 to 34 and only make provision for those who are older, already in construction and interested in registering a construction company.
“We are taking applications for the second intake. Unfortunately, we can only absorb 50 students at a time,” she said.
