Police car spooks robbers

Police foil robbery at bakery

A robbery at a bakery in New Era on Sunday evening was foiled when police officers drove past the premises and spooked the culprits.

The five men attempted to break open a safe in the building.

Amanda Greybe, the Springs police spokesperson, told the Advertiser the security guard on duty at the gate was approached by two men.

After finding the guard unarmed, the men robbed him of his panic button, cellphone and backpack, which contained his wallet, bank card and a T-shirt.

Three more men confronted another guard on the premises and he was also robbed of his cellphone.

The men demanded the keys to the safe and took the guards inside the building where they were assaulted.

During this time, the driver of a delivery truck arrived at the bakery and found himself caught up in the chaos.

He was taken to the building to join the guards.

The men forced the guards at gunpoint to open the door to the office in which the safe and drop safe are located.

They were taken to a bathroom, along with the truck driver, and locked inside.

They could hear loud banging sounds as the men tried to force open the safe.

The victims then heard the men shouting the police are outside.

Officers patrolling in a sector vehicle drove past the premises and spotted a white BMW and Blue Audi parked in the street, but did not notice anything untoward and continued their journey.

After the police car drove off, the men made a hasty getaway.

The three victims broke open the bathroom door and called the security supervisor.
