Strubenvale ATM bombing

Thieves attempting to access money in an ATM did not use enough explosive to open the machine.

An ATM bombing took place at Pick n Pay, Strubenvale, on Saturday at approximately 1.45am.

According to Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora, the complainant said he was on duty as the security officer at the time.

“He heard a sound and when he checked through the guardroom window, he saw three unidentified man standing at the ATM.”

The guard approached the suspects, but they ran away.

Ramphora says when the guard inspected the ATM, he saw that wrapping with plastic and wire filled the money dispenser.

Capt Mlangeni of explosive unit was called to the scene where he confirmed the bomb did explode, but since the explosive load was too low to do much damage, only the money dispenser was slightly damaged.

The investigation continues.
