Residents urged to report illegal taxi fare increases

Resident Ronald Mafhinini says: “A group of drivers have formed what appears to be a mini taxi rank at the Savemoor Shopping Complex."

KwaThema – Residents are complaining about the illegal taxi fare increase by the 4+1 drivers.

Resident Ronald Mafhinini says: “A group of drivers have formed what appears to be a mini taxi rank at the Savemoor Shopping Complex.

“They claim since they are not allowed to load more than three passengers, we have to pay double the price.”

Chairperson of the 4+1 taxi association Zakhele Mndebele say they are aware of the matter.

4+1 taxi drivers do their bit for Mandela Day

“Following numerous complaints from the public on Monday, I was at the KwaThema Square to address the issue with our drivers as they are not allowed to increase taxi fares during the lockdown.

“For this week the government has given taxis permission to work until Friday, but we still have to adhere to the precautionary measures as instructed by the president, therefore our local taxis will be loading two passengers instead of three,” says Mndebele.

Residents are urged to report unlawful taxi fare billing.

“The community can report such incidents to us telephonically since our offices are closed.

“They can take down the vehicle registration number of that specific driver in order to report them if they do not have the name of the driver.

“So far, KwaThema Square is the only place we are getting complaints from the public regarding the high billing of taxi fare on passengers,’’ says Mndebele.

4+1 diver Micheal Nxumalo says: “Even though we are faced with challenges because transporting our people is our daily bread, I have been adhering to the rules. My passengers are paying normal rates which is R8, nothing more.

“Our biggest challenge remains protection gear for us as we are more exposed than any other people.”
