A KwaThema secondary school learner stab another with a pen in his chest

“Because the suspect is a minor, he was released back into the care of his parents,” she explains.

KwaThema – A 17-year-old learner from a KwaThema secondary school was arrested and charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm after stabbing another learner with a pen.

The learner sustained injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where he received medical attention.

It is alleged the victim was approached by the suspect who didn’t say anything before stabbing him with a pen in the left side of his chest.

KwaThema police spokesperson, Const Media Khoza, says the suspect was searched and dagga and the weapon were found on him.

“Because the suspect is a minor, he was released back into the care of his parents,” she explains.

KwaThema station commander Col Mareketle Thobejane says the school was raided last month by the police and other local law enforcement agencies after allegations surfaced that gansterism and violence were prevalent in the school.

“Some learners were found in possession of dangerous weapons and dagga.

“The school will be continuously monitored to ensure both learners and educators are safe as part of the safer schools programme.

“We are condemning such acts of violence in schools because they may result in the loss of life.

“Learners are warned that should they be caught they will be arrested and this will also have a negative impact on their future,” she adds.

Mareketla urged learners to report any form of bullying and any criminal activities taking place in school by reporting to educators or to the police by contacting crime stop number 08600 10 111 or make use of MySAPS app.
