Metro fights against water leaks

“We want to educate and create awareness on the correct use of sewer infrastructure and servitude encroachment."

Tsakane – MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy in Ekurhuleni Tiisetso Nketle launched the third phase of war on water leaks in Tsakane on Tuesday.

This is to improve the water security by maximising water use efficiency and reducing water losses.

As part of the programme, the MMC, together with women in the department, conducted door-to-door campaigns to the residents of Langaville.

Nketle says they wanted to educate and create awareness on water conservation and demand management in an effort to encourage a culture to reduce water wastage.

“We want to educate and create awareness on the correct use of sewer infrastructure and servitude encroachment.

“We also wanted to engage residents on the City’s Blue Drop ware status and green drop waste status,” she explains.

The MMC says it is important that every drop of water is accounted for, hence, as the metro, they declared a war on water leaks.

“In this phase, we are calling on all leaders from various sectors to partner with us to successfully save water.”

The MMC visited homes in Langaville and educated them about water-saving mechanisms which included not watering the garden during the day.

“Watering the garden during the day is a wasteful activity, rather in the morning and evenings.

“We are urging residents to refrain from using the hose pipe when watering their garden but pockets and washing basin.

“Residents must also report leaking taps to their CCC offices and officials will be assigned to fix them.

“It is important as the metro we save and account for every drop of water,” she adds.
