Making It Count aims to make a difference in the community

Make it Count Youth Development, in partnership with the South African Police Services forensic department in KwaThema and the Gauteng Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Department, held a seminar to empower the youth at the committee room in KwaThema Community Hall.

KwaThema – Make it Count Youth Development, in partnership with the South African Police Services’ forensic department in KwaThema and the Gauteng Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Department, held a seminar to empower the youth at the committee room in KwaThema Community Hall.

Project coordinator Percival Vikisi, from the youth development, says, “The reason we decided to do the event was to provide a platform for professionals to have a one-on-one with the youth from our community.

“There are job opportunities within the SAPS and the arts sector, not the obvious ones which most people are aware of.”

Cons Itumeleng Mohlala from the forensic department says there are a variety of career opportunities other than being a police man who chases criminals.

“Normally, when people think of the police force, they think of having to chase criminals. They do not consider other departments, such as communications and forensics.

“There are also different careers under the forensic division, this is something I normally do at work. I offer career advice hence I welcomed the gesture to come and be a part of this event,” says Mohlala.

The youth is urged to visit local libraries and community centres to obtain information regarding funding, bursaries and information on the availability of opportunities.

One of the youth who attended, Siphiwe Mzane, says, “I learned a lot today from the speakers. I now know where to find helpful information. Before I came here, I didn’t know that there are actually people who search and groom young talent and that there are more divisions within the police force.”

Speaking on behalf of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Themba Vilakazi says, “We are encouraging the youth who have formed groups to come register their groups with us. We are looking for groups that specialise in performing arts.

“From acting, drawing, dancing and anything under the art umbrella.”
