Tlakula learners encouraged to work hard

The event kick-started with participants taking part in a fun walk and learners went on to challenge each other in various sports such as netball, soccer, indigenous games, aerobics and cricket.

KwaThema – Hard-working learners from Tlakula High School received awards during the Sport and Academic Awards, held last Friday.

This was part of the annual award ceremony hosted by the ANC chief whip in the City of Ekurhuleni Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, who adopted the school in 2017 with the aim of assisting the school academically and improving its matric performance in mathematics, science and accounting.

The initiative aimed to recognise and encourage teachers for their contribution to education and learners for their performances in academics and sport in 2019.

The event kick-started with participants taking part in a fun walk and learners went on to challenge each other in various sports such as netball, soccer, indigenous games, aerobics and cricket.

The learners and teachers were awarded certificates, schools bags, medals and trophies.

Dlabathi says as part of the academic improvement, they partnered with Gondoana Mathematics to assist the school improve in mathematics and science.

“We are optimistic that this year’s results will show a massive improvement. However, we are calling on parents to support and play an active role in their children’s education.

“We urge parents to take a keen interest by monitoring their children as they prepare to write their final exams,” says Dlabathi.

School principal Nhlanhla Thembekwayo expressed her gratitude for the continuous support she has been receiving from the office of the chief whip.

“We are happy that the office has adopted the school. We need such partners to assist us to produce the necessary skills that are required by our economy, and with such partnership we believe we are now in a position to produce products that are expected by the country,” she says.
