Residents urged to refrain from buying cars through social media

KwaThema – Police are urging residents to refrain from using social media to purchase motor vehicles.

This comes after a buyer from KwaThema was defrauded of his hard-earned money after attempting to buy a car on a social media application last week.

KwaThema police spokesperson Const Media Khoza says the victim had agreed to deposit a said amount of money into an account that he was furnished with by the owner of the vehicle.

“As soon as the transfer was made he was supposed to meet up with the owner to receive the vehicle, but the owner disappeared into thin air.

“He tried to contact the owner, but his contact numbers were forever on voicemail and the bank account number was no longer active,” she says.

Khoza says the police are concerned about the number of people who have been defrauded by online sales.

“We are pleading with residents, especially now that the festive season is approaching, to be careful of such operations that aim to defraud them of their hard-earned bonuses,” she says.
