Maria feeds the sick and poor in KwaThema

“We also help drug addicts because they usually have nowhere to go and are forced to go for days without food,” she explains.

KwaThema – Bophelong Home and Empowerment Centre is helping feed patients with chronic illnesses at Thembelisha Clinic.

After working as a home-based caregiver for years, Maria Masuku realised that one of the reasons people do not take their medication and default is that they do not have food.

“Patients know that taking their medication on an empty stomach can be a health hazard, so they end up not taking them.

“I then decided to start seeking food donations from local businesses, especially for the poorest of the poor in 2005.”

Masuku now runs a daily soup kitchen at the clinic with the help of volunteers.

“I believe that giving patients this meal makes it easy for them to take their medication.

“We also help drug addicts because they usually have nowhere to go and are forced to go for days without food,” she explains.

The team also pays home visits and donates food parcels.

Mam’ Masuku says although she receives great support from companies and individuals, she still appeals to the community to lend a helping hand.

“I have realised that we can never do enough. Each year, I have more and more people coming to seek help from us and it is difficult to cover all of them because we depend on donations.”
