Duduza cop shines in Angola

“I started playing for the SAPS in 2016. We competed and finished second in the East Rand tournament and were crowned as the runners-up.”

Duduza – Det Const Moeketsi Monaheng was part of the team that represented the country at the Southern African Police Organisations Cup which was held in Angola.

Monaheng joined the force in 2014. After completing his training as a policeman, he was stationed at Duduza Police Station, and it was there that he developed his passion for sports.

He says he always loved playing soccer from a young age, but after completing matric he decided to follow his dream to protect the country as a policeman.

“I had to choose between the two, and the safety of my country came first.

“I was happy when I found out that within SAPS there are opportunities to pursue my love for soccer.

“I started playing for the SAPS in 2016. We competed and finished second in the East Rand tournament and were crowned as the runners-up.

“In 2017 and 2018 we won and I was selected for the Ekurhuleni squad and went on to compete in the provincial tournament.

“I was selected to be part of the national team, which went on to represent the country in Angola,” he says.

The detective constable says his hard work paid off. He was selected to represent South Africa at the games in Angola against other SADC countries.

“We finished third and received a bronze medal and I was awarded best player of the tournament and also finished as the top goal scorer with seven goals,” he adds.

Monaheng says he was motivated by the Duduza SAPS station commander, Lt Col Bheki Mhlungu, who is a former football player.

“He advised me not to hold back on my ambitions because the SAPS has created a favourable environment for members to reach their full potential,” he adds.
