Teams to participate in local sports festival

“The objective of the festival is to keep learners occupied during the school holidays.”

KwaThema – KwaThema Karate Association will be hosting karate demonstrations and teaching women of all ages self-defence techniques during the School Holidays Sports Festival.

The games, which are organised by the KwaThema Sports Confederation, will be running from September 25 to 28 during the school holidays.

KwaThema Karate Association secretary Dave More says they are happy to be invited to take part in the sporting extravaganza.

“As part of our demonstrations on the days, we will be teaching women how to defend themselves.

“We are concerned about the number of women who are killed or sexually violated daily.

“We are also saddened by some of the public employees who include, among others, teachers and nurses who fall victim to their patients and learners.

“As part of our contribution to this fight, we are going to teach women how to protect and defend themselves,” he says.

KwaThema Sports Confederation secretary Vusi Shabangu says the initiative was put in place during the Easter school holidays.

“The objective of the festival is to keep learners occupied during the school holidays.

“We don’t want to have the learners having too much time on their hands to the point where they start participating in criminal activities.

“We also want to have all the sporting codes participating in the festival and recognised.

“All the sporting codes affiliated to the confederation will participate.

“We will see teams in soccer, bodybuilding, basketball, karate, athletics, netball and cricket,” he says.
