Drop all and read

The Department of Education encourages teachers, staff members and learners to "drop all and read” at least once a day.

KwaThema – Sakhelwe Primary School took part in the provincial Drop All and Read campaign on Tuesday.

The Department of Education encourages teachers, staff members and learners to “drop all and read” at least once a day.

“It has been very good for us, and now we enjoy it as much as the learners do,” says Joyce Mosehla, who is part of the public service staff at the school.

The learners and staff each bring reading material, in any language, to read first thing in the morning.

“Sometimes the learners have the opportunity to explain what they have read and what they learned from it,” adds Joyce.

She says this exercise also helps the learners to get into the habit of reading silently.

“I believe that starting the day with such a calming exercise really centres them and us.

“I hope it continues for the rest of the year.”

The department’s aim is to encourage parents, teachers, youth – the whole community – to work together to improve the literacy rate in our country.

They believe reading is essential for education as knowledge is gained through reading.
