Brakpan Museum NPC invites Kwatsaduza to educational tour

Mkhoza says this tour is especially important because the history of black people is not well documented, preserving the sites and teaching people about them will assist in changing that.

Kwatsaduza – The Brakpan Museum Non-Profit Company (NPC) has extended an invitation to the community of Kwatsaduza to an educational tour that will cover Brakpan, Duduza and KwaThema history on June 17.

The tour will visit eight gravesites in the area, which include farm community ancestral graves, mine location graves, Anglo-Boer War concentration camp graves and victims of conflict memorial graves.

Director of the Brakpan Museum NPC Vikinduku Mkhonza says it is important for these sites to be conserved.

“Graves are an important part of the history of an area as they tell stories of the past.

“Our job as a heritage entity is to preserve and conserve these heritage resources so we can know where we come from, as well as educate future generations,” he explains.

Mkhoza says this tour is especially important because the history of black people is not well documented, preserving the sites and teaching people about them will assist in changing that.

“The history of black people is undocumented, so we need to have these tours to make sure it is known, especially because the government is looking to make history a compulsory subject in schools,” he continues.

Mkhonza adds that the importance of knowing where the graves are enables the community to oppose any development activity that might disturb the history that rests in the graves.

There will be a free tour bus that will leave from Faranani Multipurpose Centre in Tsakane on Monday at 9am and return at 2pm.
