Duduza – Ten people were arrested for various crimes over the weekend by the Duduza police.

The arrests come as a result of intensified crime prevention operations that were conducted by the local police station.

Duduza police spokesperson, Sgt Harry Manaka says one male suspect was arrested for rape after police acted on information after receiving a complaint of a missing person.

“It is alleged that a mentally disturbed female aged (23) was reported missing at the Duduza police which resulted in police embarking on a search.

“While the police were searching for the missing person, information came from one of the relatives that she was spotted in a house in Masechaba section in the company of a certain black male.

“The police acted swiftly on the information and pounced on a backyard shack where they found the male with the victim partially naked.

“The suspect was arrested and a case of rape opened,” explains Manaka.

Meanwhile in a separate incident, a male was arrested for murder in Phumla Mqashi section following an argument between two males.

“It is alleged during the scuffle one of the males stabbed another on the thigh and the victim was declared dead on the scene and the police.

“The suspect was traced, arrested and charged with murder,” says Manaka.

Other crimes where people were arrested include two men arrested for being in possession of drugs, one arrested for selling liquor without licence and another three for theft.

Speaking after the arrests was Duduza SAPS station commander Lt Col Bheki Mhlungu expressed concern by the rate of violent crimes in the streets of Duduza.

Mhlungu assured the residents that the police will continue with the operations to ensure that safety is restored in the area.
