Six die on the road this Easter weekend

Fifty-nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence in the EMPD eastern operational region, which includes Springs, Benoni, Brakpan, Nigel and Kwatsaduza.

The Easter long weekend operations in Ekurhuleni conducted between last Thursday afternoon throughout the weekend up to Monday yielded a total of 108 drivers for driving under the influence, 53 for excessive speeding with 218 issued with fines for driving over the speed limit, and over 30 000 caught on static speed cameras.

Fifty-nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence in the EMPD eastern operational region, which includes Springs, Benoni, Brakpan, Nigel and Kwatsaduza.

In the southern region, which includes Alberton, Germiston, Boksburg and Kathorus, 23 drunk drivers ended up behind bars with the northern region, which includes Kempton Park, Edenvale and Tembisa, with 26 arrested.

Four fatal accidents took place wherein six people died.

“On Fred Wagner Road in Duduza on Friday at 12.11am, the driver of a VW Golf lost control and overturned resulting in the death of the driver and two passengers.

“Also on Friday on Poplar Road at Mapleton in Boksburg, a Toyota minibus taxi lost control and hit a pedestrian standing on a sidewalk and ended up colliding with a tuck shop and the pedestrian died on scene.

“On Saturday at 4pm on the R21 between the Olifantsfontein and Bapsfontein turn-off, two motorcycles sideswiped each other and one collided with a steel barrier with the driver dying instantly on scene.

“On the M7 between Mbali and Tsotetsi in Katlehong on Sunday at around 10.30pm, a Toyota sedan skipped a stop street and T-boned a Mazda sedan, resulting in the driver of the Mazda being killed,” says EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.
