Metro responds to queries about the timeline for the library’s re-opening

Gadebe says as an interim measure, the metro will provide a mobile bus service on Tuesdays from 8.30am to 1am.

The Springs Library has been closed for over three months now after the storm which caused flooding in January, and there seems no end in sight for the book drought Springs readers are currently experiencing.

The library was initially scheduled to reopen in March; however, it has yet to be reopened.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe says: “The Springs Library is closed for an extended period to repair all the damage that was caused by flooding.

“Due to Occupational Health and Safety regulations, the library cannot be opened partially.

“The work that is currently being carried out at the library includes the waterproofing of the roof and ceilings.

“Furthermore, there needs to be replacement of ducting cupboards, carpets, painting of the inside walls and ceilings, and electrical work as it was damaged by the water,” says Gadebe.

Gadebe says as an interim measure, the metro will provide a mobile bus service on Tuesdays from 8.30am to 1pm.

Ward 75 councillor Dean Stone says: “It’s just a shame that the metro would take this long to fix the library.

“The metro and the contractor haven’t communicated with me and I’m the one who is responsible for reporting back to the community.

“I’m left in the dark and have no choice but to take this up with the HOD of Libraries, who is part of Sports, Heritage, Recreation, Arts and Culture (SHRAC).”
