KwaThema cyclist looks into starting a local cycling club

“Cycling would be a great way for them to keep fit while socialising with their peers.” - Matumelo

KwaThema – Cyclist Matumelo Tjabadi is encouraging Kwatsaduza residents to get a bike and pedal their way to a healthier life.

Matumelo has been cycling since 2017 and says she started after buying her children bikes and deciding to get one for herself.

“After getting the bikes for the children, I decided to get one for myself to try something new,” she says.

On her introduction to cycling as a sport, Matumelo says: “I had a flat tyre and went to get it fixed at a bike shop in Selcourt, where I was invited to a training session and I never looked back.”

During the many kilometres she has cycled, the 34-year-old mother of two was intrigued at the lack of black women cyclists in the East Rand and invited them to join her.

“People my age are looking after their families and they neglect themselves.

“Cycling would be a great way for them to keep fit while socialising with their peers,” she says.

Tjabadi says the sport is relatively affordable, with the major costs being the bike and safety equipment in the beginning.

Speaking on her highlights since she started cycling, Matumelo cites the 109km Cape Town Cycle Tour, which she finished in five hours.
