Men accused of Menzi robbery still in police custody

Tsakane – Bail hearing for the four men arrested in connection with the robbery at Menzi Primary School has been postponed again by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The four, Ernest Khan Awasi (36), Hyaginth Cho Mulul (29), Fan Terrance Bonung (24) and Fonga Muama Mohammed (40), are facing charges of theft after stolen tablets were found in their shop on the corner of Mooi and Helen Joseph streets in Johannesburg.

The accused were arrested after 22 tablets and three laptops, which are believed to be some of the goods stolen from the school, were recovered from their store days after the school was broken into.

Tsakane police spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mngomezulu says the accused’s formal bail hearing has been postponed for February 13 and the accused will remain in police custody until then.

“Further investigations are underway in a bid to track down the robbers who sold the stolen goods to the accused.

“We are calling on anyone with information that could lead the police to the whereabouts of the robbers to come forward,” she adds.

A few days after the school was formally opened by MEC for Basic Education Panyaza Lesufi, 185 tablets, eight laptops, desktops, an overhead projector, a plasma TV and a number of keys to the school were stolen.
