Men shot in shootout at Grootvlei Mine

The cause of the shootout is not yet clear but the police suspect illegal mining was involved.

One man was shot dead and four men were injured in Grootvlei Mine in the early hours of Friday morning.

The police received a call about people who had been shot at the mine.

When the police arrived on the scene, they found four injured men.

After rushing the wounded to Far East Rand Hospital, the wounded men indicated there was a fifth person in the hole who had also been shot.

After the arrival of the search and rescue team, a man of about 30 years old was found dead.

The cause of the shootout is not yet clear but the police suspect illegal mining was involved.

A case of attempted murder and murder has been opened at the Springs Police Station.

“We are asking those with knowledge of, or any eye witnesses to the crime, to contact the police.

“We will not stop until the suspects have been caught,” says Springs Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora.
