Elderly members of Ratanang Elderly Organisation took it upon themselves to clean Duduza Taxi Rank inside-out on Wednesday.

KwaThema – Elderly members of Ratanang Elderly Organisation took it upon themselves to clean Duduza Taxi Rank inside-out on Wednesday.

After identifying its filthy state, the elders picked up papers and swept the rank.

The founder of the centre, Nomvula Sibanyoni, says the taxi rank is one of the most important places in the area.

“Visitors’ first impressions of the area and its people must be that we live in a pigsty.

“This is a bad impression because KwaThema has been known for its clean state in all the neighbouring townships in Kwatsaduza.

“It is concerning that it is so filthy and that even sewage runs through the stalls,” she says.

Nomvula says they decided to take it upon themselves to clean the place and encouraged commuters to use the available refuse bins.

“There are refuse bins inside the taxi rank but people are choosing to throw items on the floor.

“We are calling on residents to treat the taxi rank as their second home and to keep it clean,” she further explains.

The cleaning camp is said to be an annually initiative which will be held before the festive season starts.

“We are calling on residents to join in cleaning the rank and for the municipality to have workers stationed at the venue to keep it clean at all times.
