Tsakane – Star Girls trashed Youth on the Move, 12 goals to six on Saturday.

The netball team’s coach, Matshidiso Silinda, is thrilled that the team is finally on a roll.

“The soccer teams have been playing well for a while now.

“But the girls seem to be catching up with the netball.”

The mother of three is the founder of the We Can Do It! community project out of her own home to get her neighbours’ children off the streets.

She has managed to create sports grounds in the open field behind her house in Extension 12.

“From Monday to Thursday, I help the children with their homework and on Saturdays, we do life skills and sports.

“We are very busy,” says Silinda.

Now the girls are on the netball field as much as the boys play soccer.

She went on to explain the garage she uses as a classroom can no longer house all 91 children comfortably.

“I wish we had a bigger space or that we could find a way to extend the garage. The children kneel on the floor and use the chairs as desks.”

Silinda says although she has so many children to look after, she hopes more children will join them.

“Anyone who can assist us, please do so.

“We usually have sandwiches on Saturdays, because we have someone who donates bread.

“But I wish we could have more for the children.

“I want to give them a safe space to grow and discover their talents.”
