Excitement as school gets award

KwaThema –Tlakula Secondary School hosted their first annual sports day on Friday.

The event was part of Chief Whip Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi’s continuing commitment and support to improve learner academic performance and sports in the school.

Various games including indigenous games, netball, soccer and aerobics, were part of the menu on display on the day.

More than 1 5000 learners, teachers and members of school management, partook in a fun run to get the sports day underway.

“We hosted the sports day because we believe our township schools have potential to become future stars.

“Learners must be encouraged to partake in school activities because this helps to address other social ills affecting our pupils on a daily basis,” says Jongizizwe.

The office of the chief whip donated a pair of netball kit, soccer kit and footballs.

Professional cricket coaches conducted coaching clinics.

Tlakula High’s team manager and teacher Lungile Dlamini says the school appreciated the donation.

“This comes at the right time when the school is really in need of sports gear.

“Our learners are also excited about the recognition, and the donation will be a constant reminder of the school participation in school sports,” he says.

Dlamini says the school had to dig deep into their pockets to ensure that learners participated in sports.

“We had to buy soccer balls, pay for travelling costs from our coffers to subsidise sports activities,” he says.

In the netball team, the best u-16 defender award went to Gugulethu Zwane. Busisiwe Mtshali was awarded for the best centre while Oyama Bofu snatched the top soccer award.

In the netball team u-17, Amanda Mkhanya and Nokuthula Khoza received the best defender awards and Queeneth Sibeko romped home with the best centre award.

The awards for the girls’ soccer went to Banele Maseko and Nomfundo Mothibe, who received the best defender awards.

In the u-15 soccer team, Manqoba Nxumalo was crowned as the best goalkeeper while Michael Boitumelo Phiri received the best defender award.

The best midfielder went to Siphelele Mpanza. Njabulo Sibanyoni was the best attacker with Siphelele Mpanza taking the best leader award of the tournament.

In the u-17, Mntoyintoni Ndimphiwe was crowned as the best defender, Mzwakhe Malaza best midfielder, Rampa Mkhuseli the best attacker, Vuyo Ndingeni the top goal scorer, Mntoyintoni Ndimphiwe and Siphesisihle Mabena the best leader.
