Springs resident warns about possible jewellery scam
“When he didn’t come back after 5pm I realised I had been scammed,” says Phonela.
Wright Park resident Tshebeletso Phonela would like to warn the public about a possible jewellery scam.
Phonela was approached by two men last Sunday afternoon who claimed to be looking for the design number on her jewellery so they could copy the design in exchange for a photo frame and wicker basket.
“We looked at my earrings and rings, and we could see the first three numbers clearly, but not the last one.
“So they poured some chemical on my jewellery and my jewellery turned black and started cracking.

“They then said it was because it was copper gold, but I couldn’t really see it clearly because the fumes coming from the chemical were so strong.
“The one suspect then wrapped my jewellery in tissue and put it in a plastic bag so he could take it to Benoni to their shop.
“When he didn’t come back after 5pm I realised I had been scammed,” says Phonela.
Phonela says she is speaking out to warn other people so that the same thing doesn’t happen to them.
“Maybe if somebody had spoken up then I wouldn’t have lost my jewellery,” says Phonela.
