Concerned KwaThema resident donates wheelchair to gogo Elizabeth

“I am truly blessed and overwhelmed by the help I have been receiving this year from the community,” says gogo Elizabeth Mabena.

KwaThema – Gogo Elizabeth Mabena (81) received a brand-new wheelchair from a good Samaritan last Thursday.

Her story was published in the African Reporter on June 8 after volunteers joined hands to build her a ramp outside her kitchen door.

One of her legs was amputated seven years ago and earlier this year the doctors removed the other leg.

Gogo Elizabeth says she struggled to wheel herself out of her house.

“My wheelchair broke two months ago and it was a mission to wheel myself without the help of others.

“I was over the moon when councillor Thulane Simelane told me someone wanted to donate a wheelchair.

“I no longer have to scream for my neighbours to help me out of the house to enjoy the winter sun or see my neighbours.

“I am truly blessed and overwhelmed by the help I have been receiving this year from the community,” she says.

Roza Mahlangu, who donated the wheelchair, says she had bought it for her mother while she was in hospital, but her mom died a few months ago.

“When I read the story I immediately felt the need to donate the wheelchair because it was gathering dust,” she says.

Simelane says they are glad they were able to improve gogo’s life through the wheelchair donation.

“We appreciate the support we receive from the local business people and residents whenever we need their support to improve someone’s life.

“We are not going to be able to bring change without the help of all stakeholders,” he says.
