Police encourage parents to report crime – children visit Tsakane Police Station

Over 120 children from 22 day care centres marched from Modjadji Street to Tsakane Police Station to plead to the police to protect them, on Friday.

Tsakane – Holding placards and chanting songs the children urged adults to stop abusing them and allow them to have the right to education.

The children visited Tsakane Police Station and Tsakane Fire Station as part of their educational tour.

Event organiser Siphiwe Masuku says the tour was part of the child protection week initiatives organised by the daycare centres.

“We wanted to educate the children about the important departments which they can report abuse to.

“We are concerned about the high number of children who are abused and wanted them to speak out or report to an elder when someone touches them in a wrong way.

“We also wanted to assure the children that they can trust and not be scared of the police,” she says.

Tsakane police spokesperson Sergeant Lebogang Ramaesa says they took the children on a tour of the police station, empty cells and showed them some of their vehicles.

“We have identified that many children are abused by the people who are family, mothers’ boyfriends or neighbours.

“Family members often don’t want to report the cases and chose to forgive the perpetrators.

“This is a criminal offence and an accessory to the crime. Those found can be charged and prosecuted by the law.

“The perpetrators need to be removed from the society and face the law.

“We are calling on parents not to leave their children in the care of people they don’t know or boyfriends and not neglect them.

“The cases can be reported anonymously on 10111 or 011 363 5300,” he says.
