Youth do good deeds on June 16

Ikusasa Lethu brightened the smiles of 145 underprivileged girls in Mkhancwa in the “Lending a helping hand” project on Saturday.

In celebration of Youth Day, the organisation decided to donate much-needed toiletries at the informal settlement.

“We thought of doing something different on this day because we believe the significance of June 16 is fading.

“Especially in this era where people are misrepresenting the purpose of this day,” explains Thandazo Mabena, the founder.

The group focused on lending a hand to their deprived neighbouring community.

This is not the first, nor the last time that Ikusasa Lethu visited Mkhancwa.

“The place has become a priority to our organisation.

“There are many child-headed homes, and families who are barely making it through the month.”

She says Youth Day is about sacrificing oneself for the good of another.

“This is to commemorate our fallen brothers and sisters.

“We believe that we would have done the same, in that struggle.”

Our struggle today is to make sure our girls don’t deal with such burdens while going to school.”

Thandazo believes the initiative should be close to most women’s hearts.

“We know the pain of not having some of the essential needs of every girl.”

The organisation collected the toiletries from their friends and families.

“We hope these essentials will carry them through the next three months.

“We also want to thank Capitec bank for helping us out.”
