KwaThema runners braved the Comrades Marathon – results

“This year we had sponsorship and donations from the Goodwill Games, local business people and residents.”

KwaThema- 52 long distance runners from KwaThema Striders were part of the 20 000 runners who braved the 90.184km 2018 Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

The race started at 5.30am at City Hall in Pietermaritzburg and finished at 5.30pm in Durban.

Thirty-seven of the runners completed the race while two sustained serious injuries and had to be rushed to hospital.

Sbongiseni Skhosana says this year the team had the highest number of runners who qualified and participated in the Comrades.

“Last year we only had 24 runners but the number has doubled and saw 11 new runners participating in the marathon.

“In the previous years many runners who qualified could not participate because they couldn’t afford the travelling and accommodation expenses.

“This year we had sponsorship and donations from the Goodwill Games, local business people and residents.

Deputy chairperson Mosa Selepe says they have been preparing for the marathon as a team since last year.

“One of the biggest races was running the 73km race from KwaThema to Heidelberg Mall and back.

“We are proud of the runners for working hard and braving the challenges of the race to the end.

“This is one of the toughest races, especially this year, because of the added three kilometres and the bad weather,” he says.

KwaThema Striders who completed the 90.184km 2018 Comrades Marathon.

Selepe says the team starts preparing for the following year’s marathon the year before.

“We are going to start exercising again from September and calling those interested to join the team to come forward,” he says.

KwaThema Striders oldest and first-time Comrades Marathon challenger, Sibongile Mokoena (58) says she managed to tackle 33km of the 90.184km.

“It was hard as I had expected. I pushed myself but could no longer run for another lapse.

“I am going back next year and hopefully I will complete it,” she says.

Pure Ndlovu finished the 90.184km Comrades Marathon with a time of 8:42:12.
