Duduza Class of 1976 reunion

Class of 1976, learners and teachers, are invited to commemorate the Youth Day together.

Duduza – Popla Khoza, Solly Rakosa and Roux Skhosana were only boys when South Africa’s youth took a stand against the apartheid government.

“In all the commotion of the uprising Bafana Radebe, in Duduza, was the first victim of police brutality on that day.

“And we feel, to this day, that he is not celebrated or honoured,” says Khoza.

In the weeks following the mass demonstration by black learners, many were arrested.

“We were detained for a while, but I was discharged after six months.

“Others were not so lucky,” adds Khoza.

Rakosa says he was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Robben Island.

“We want to come together and look back on that day.

“To celebrate our efforts in the struggle for the country’s liberation,” he explains.

The group is inviting all former learners and teachers who were in Duduza in 1976.

“We also need those who have become clergy to reach out before the event.”

The day’s activities include a visit to the grave of Bafana Radebe at the Old Cemetery.

They asked that all attendees dress in school uniform (of any school).

The event will start at 9am at Esibonelwesinhle Secondary School.

“We ask that all those who still have the Alexandra Hymn books to bring them,” says Khoza.
