Increase in hijacking and burglaries in Duduza

“People must look around for any suspicious vehicles following them.”

Duduza – Duduza police have expressed their concern about the rise of burglaries and hijackings in the area.

There have been more hijackings reported in the month of May than in the first four months of the year.

All the victims were robbed at gunpoint at night by more than one person.

Duduza police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka says this raises concern because the police are patrolling all areas in Duduza.

“These criminals seem to choose their victims carefully, then follow them to their places of residence where there is minimal movement of people.

“Residents need to be extra careful, especially when driving at night.

“People must look around for any suspicious vehicles following them.

“They must always be vigilant when they are about to park or about to drive off and ensure that someone is waiting for them at the gate.”

Manaka says they must ensure tracking and anti-hijacking devices are working properly.

“Keep a whistle handy and blow it when you see suspicious people or witness any crime,” he adds.

Manaka says they have also identified a rise in burglaries both at residential and business premises, especially schools.

“We urge the community, especially those residing next to schools to assist the police by being observant and always report any suspicious movements around the schools, especially after hours and on weekends.

“The community can also form neighbourhood patrol teams to patrol the school vicinity, this will minimise the chances of burglaries,” he says.
