KwaThema learners informed about dangers of drugs
“Many are forced to drop out of school and resort to crime to feed their addiction."
KwaThema – Learners at Ifa Lifa Secondary School were educated about the dangers of substance abuse on Thursday.
The educational talk was conducted by members of KwaThema police, officials from Social Development, Community Safety, Youth Desk and Correctional Services.

KwaThema police spokesperson, Captain Thabo Sibuyi, says they saw the need to host the educational talks at the school.
“Drug abuse refers to the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs.
“In some of the police searches we identified that there are learners who are experimenting with drugs.
“Through the talks, we showed them the dangers of taking drugs and the future consequences.
“Many are forced to drop out of school and resort to crime to feed their addiction.
“We believe prevention is better than cure and through the talks we might stop one learner who wanted to try out drugs,” he says.

Sibuyi says the learners were also taught about the classification of drugs.
“There are the legal drugs, prescription drugs, which can be bought over the counter, while the illegal drugs include nyaope, dagga and cocaine.
“People need to know they are both addictive and can ruin one’s life,” he says.
