Comrades clean graves of fallen heroes on Freedom Day
Members of the Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) cleaned the graves of some of the fallen struggle heroes who were laid to rest at the Rest in Peace Cemetery as part of the 24th Freedom Day celebrations.
KwaThema – This formed part of the annual commemorative events held on Freedom Day.
Glen Ramotsepe says every year they clean the graves and identify those that still need headstones and those that are damaged.
“Many of those who died were buried at this cemetery.
“During the cleaning campaign, we also share their history with young comrades whom we expect to take the baton that will move the country towards economic freedom and the attainment of land.
“These fallen men and women were not scared to stand up for what they believed in, no matter the dangers they faced.
“Many of them were killed with hand grenades or were shot by the apartheid security police.
“These young comrades need to know about the sacrifices and lives which were lost for them to enjoy democracy,” he says.
Glen says some of the graves that they cleaned include those of Pepsie Mahlangu, Papi Ndlovu, Darkie Marule, Keketso, Moeketse, Rooi Mabena and Lucky Molefe.
ANC’s chief whip Jongizizwe Dlabathi, who joined the comrades, says the campaign was also to acknowledge and pay respect to the contribution the fallen heroes made towards democracy.
“Even though they are now deceased, we still appreciate their contribution to the fight against apartheid,” he says.
