Chief whip calls illegal occupation of land

“We understand that there are some service delivery issues in different wards but we are working to resolve them.”

KwaThema – The Chief Whip of Council, Jongizizwe Dlabathi, has warned against the illegal occupation of municipal land and houses.

“We are calling on the local government to act swiftly against the perpetrators because this is a criminal act.”

He spoke during the Ekurhuleni Syndicate Broadcast, which is hosted by the city’s communications and branding

department in Bedfordview on Thursday.

The Siyaqhuba municipal radio programme is held once a month. Dlabathi says there was land grabbing incidents reported in and around Ekurhuleni in recent months.

Chief Whip of Council Jongizizwe Dlabathi addresses some of the issues residents had.

“We understand that there are some service delivery issues in different wards but we are working to resolve them.

“We are appealing to residents to be patient with the municipal processes in ensuring that those who have registered for their houses and are already approved are being prioritised in the allocation process.

“The municipality plans to build 100 000 houses and 59 service stands.

“The 20 informal settlements electrified in 19 months have provided over 4 000 service stands.

“The results are there for everyone to see,” he says.

Linda Mofokeng, a resident of Extension 10, Ward 84 in Tsakane, says they are still waiting for their homes to be supplied with electricity.

“The residents of Ext Nine and 10 were conflicted regarding illegal electricity connections where some transformers were destroyed,” he says.

Dlabathi says all the issues raised will be reported to the necessary departments and followed up as part of our oversight responsibility as council and councillors in their respective wards.

“We are calling on residents to be active citizens by participating in community meetings when they are called by their ward councilors.”

Speaking against maladministration and corruption, he says without hesitation all acts and deeds which are intentionally undermining good governance and clean administration must be responded through the established structures within council.

“So far, 20 informal settlements in the city have been supplied with electricity since the new administration came into office.

“The city has 118 informal settlements and has committed to electrifying all of them within this term of office,” he says.
