Residents educated about different types of abuse and their rights

“There are many victims who are not aware of their rights and the ways to identify acts of violence.”

Duduza – Members of the SAPS in Duduza joined forces with the Department of Community Safety to host an abuse awareness campaign at Duduza Clinic, last week.

The event was to educate and sensitise the community about different types of acts of violence.

Duduza police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka says they wanted to empower the victims of violence with information about their rights.

“The clinic is one of the places that attend to victims of violence.

“There are many victims who are not aware of their rights and the ways to identify acts of violence.

“They end-up not reporting the matter or fearing stigmatisation.

“This was also to build a relationship with the residents to feel comfortable working with the police,” she says.

Manaka says during the campaign some of the victims came forward to seek help.

“We are calling on the residents to come forward and report any cases of violence to the police.

“We have services available to support the victims,” he says.

Resident Norah Mulaudzi says she is happy that the police educated them about different types of abuse.

“As a recovering victim of abuse, I didn’t know or understand some of the abuses they mentioned.

“Many of the women and men who attended will be able to know when they are being abused,” she says.
