R10 bank fee for Sassa cardholders

As of April 1, 2018, the South African Security Agency (Sassa) will no longer carry the cost of bank accounts, including those of Grindrod Bank.

“This means all beneficiaries using banks to access their grants will be liable for the costs of banking fees.

“However, beneficiaries who utilise the Pay Point and biometric Point of Sale (POS) devices will continue to be subsidised,” explains David Polkinghorne, the bank’s managing director.

Sassa beneficiaries will now pay R10 in bank charges to access their social grants.

This is mainly because there is no contract between Sassa and Grindrod Bank.

Grindrod will provide banking services to Sassa, while Sassa transfers beneficiaries from the Grindrod account to South African Post Office PostBank accounts.

Sassa’s general manager, Dianne Dunkerley, assured the Standing Committee on Public Accounts that grants would be paid electronically from April 1, while cash payments would be made from April 3 at Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) pay points subsequent to the Constitutional Court’s extension of the CPS contract for six months.

Grindrod Bank provides banking services to Sassa grant recipients, paying 17 million grants to 10.6 million distinct cardholders.

They will do this in close association with CPS who provide the card technology and manage the card programme on behalf of the government of South Africa.

Paseka Letsatsi, Sassa spokesperson, says “all our systems are ready and beneficiaries are assured that they will receive their social grants without any disruptions.”

Grindrod Bank also reassures all beneficiaries that grant payments will continue to be paid as normal to all cards and can be used at any retail point and any POS or ATM.

Sassa cardholders may call 0800 60 01 60 (for a free call back service).

EasyPay Everywhere cardholders may call 0860 99 41 62 (for a free call back service).
