‘Drugs will derail your future’

Drug addict and teacher Nkosana Radebe is warning young people to refrain from experimenting with drugs.

KwaThema – The 40-year-old has been using cocaine for the past seven years and is ready to seek help and clean up his act.

Nkosana says he started taking drugs seven years ago to fit in with high profile friends but now he wants to quit.

“I didn’t want to be an outcast among my friends; they seemed to be different people under the influence of drugs so I wanted to experience it too.

“I convinced myself that I would not allow myself to be addicted but have it under control, but I was wrong.

“I owe loan sharks, drug lords and friends money. My car is in the possession of someone I owe money, which I could not afford to pay back,” he says.

Nkosana says he is tired of living for drugs.

“I have lost good friends, the trust of loved ones, houses, business, employment and valuables because of drugs.

“There is no future in taking drugs but health complications and living in fear of being killed,” he says.

Nkosana says he used to be very active in his community organising beauty pageants and other community development projects.

“But today I live for my next fix; all I ever think about is affording cocaine,” he says.

Nkosana says he is pleading with parents not to give up on their children who are addicted to drugs.

“They made wrong decisions but that doesn’t mean they are bad people.

“They need your support to be able to kick the addiction and to stay clean after rehabilitation,” he says.
