“We were sitting in the kitchen and saw a cloud of smoke coming from the living room.

“When we went to investigate, the bedrooms and living room were covered in smoke.

“The neighbours were already on top of the roof trying to put out the fire.

“I could only save my ID and Sassa card,” she says.

Maria says she has been trying to find help from local business people and government with no success.

“Councillor has visited me a few times through the years promising to bring help but nothing ever comes out of it.

“We are forced to sleep in the house even though it still reeks of smoke like it happened yesterday.

“I can’t afford to fix the house because I depend on my social grant which supports my grandchildren,” she says.

Masina commanded for the MMC of housing, Lesiba Mpya, to prioritise fixing the house.

“It is unacceptable that after so many years the family has not received any help from the municipality.

“The electricity needs to be fixed because it is putting the family’s lives in danger.

“We will come back after two weeks to evaluate how far the house has been fixed and we are hoping by then the family will be able to move back in,” he says.
