Senior citizens apply for smart card IDs

“I was happy when I received a positive response from them to help render their mobile services to us.”

Senior citizens in KwaThema recently got the opportunity to apply for their smart card IDs with the help of chief Elijah Skhosana.

The Ndebele chief partnered with Home Affairs to make this possible.

Skhosana says he was worried about some of the elderly people in the area who could not afford to go to the Home Affairs offices in town to apply for the new IDs.

“They also complained about the long queues.

“I learned that the department offers free mobile services in the community, so I decided to approach them.

“I was happy when I received a positive response from them to help render their mobile services to us,” he says.

Skhosana says he is calling on residents in the area who still don’t have smart IDs to come forward and seek help.

“The department will be coming back in January to transport the applicants to the Home Affairs offices to complete the application.

“Those interested are invited to come forward,” he says.

Paulos Mabena (75) says he is still using his old green book because he could not afford to apply for a new ID.

“But when I heard the announcement that the department will be rendering free services in the area, I decided to take advantage of it,” he says.
