Centre opens doors to disabled children

“They have rights and deserve to be treated fairly like any citizen of this country.”

Newly launched Sibusiso Children’s Home has opened its doors to children born with special needs in the area.

The centre held a Christmas picnic at Indaba Tree Park on Wednesday.

The centre, operating from 14 Nyakale Street, Highland, was officially launched in November.

Centre founder Jabulile Molakeng says they decided to open a centre in the area after years of trying to find a home for their disabled child.

“We were blessed with a child with disabilities,” Jabulile says. “We didn’t know how to take care of her but learned through the years.

“We didn’t want her to be away from us and the family, or spend weeks not being in contact with her.”

Jabulile approached social workers, who assisted with the formalities of registering the home.

“We are currently taking in children with epilepsy and those born with disabilities.”

Jabulile says they are happy with the help they are receiving from the community.

“The support from the community and business owners is overwhelming and we appreciate it.

“We are calling on parents who have children born with disability to enrol in centres so that they can receive the necessary support and treatment.

“The days of locking children with disabilities behind closed doors are over,” says Jabulile.

“They have rights and deserve to be treated fairly like any citizen of this country.”
