Schools score through art

For Theo-Twala Primary the money came at just the right time, as it was looking to build new toilets for its learners.

KwaThema – Eight schools in Kwatsaduza and Springs were chosen as the winners of the local building material Art-at-Heart competition.

The competition sees learners from each school submitting their best artwork.

The Winning artwork is displayed at the awards ceremony and then remains on show in the sponsoring company’s stores for the next six years.

Lana Martens of Wired Communications says the winners received Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively.

The Manager’s Choice award was also presented to the overall winner of the competition, Madlala Vilakazi from Tsimong Primary School.

“This award was announced on the day and the winner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy,” Lana said.

The winner also officially opened the company’s new store at KwaThema Square.

“Each school received a building voucher worth of R15 000 during the opening of KwaThema Square store last week.”

Lana says one of the winning schools plans to renovate its school building, another wants to build bathrooms, while another will buy garden tools to make its own vegetable garden.

“Theo-Twala Primary School, Masimini Primary School and Fred Habedi Primary School are three of the eight schools that each received R15 000.”

For Theo-Twala Primary, the money came at just the right time.

“Theo-Twala Primary School says they are going to use the money to build bathrooms for their learners,” says Lana.

“They are currently using portable toilets which are also a health risk.”

Masimini Primary School will be using the money to complete construction of a new building.

“This will also include renovations to the current building,” Lana says. “The voucher will go a long way in making this a reality for the school.”
