Programme helps learners with maths and languages

FOMAL is one of a few after-school projects that cater for primary school learners in the community.

KwaThema – Focus on Maths and Languages (Fomal) aims to break the cycle of poor education in township schools.

Established in 2013, the programme assists learners from Grades Three to Nine with mathematics, isiZulu, Tswana, Afrikaans and English.

“It is compulsory for all our learners to do maths and two languages with us,” says Eldah Morulane, one of the educators.

Fomal is one of a few after-school projects that cater for primary school learners in the community.

“It is not important which school the child attends, even if it is not in the township.”

Morulane says they have seen a great improvement in the academic results of their learners.

“They perform really well in their respective schools.”

In 2018, the project will also take on Grade 10 learners.

“Unfortunately, we will not cater for mathematical literacy, but pure maths only.”

The teachers are inviting parents who would like their children to join the programme next year.

The meeting will be held at Khangezile Primary School on November 11, at 2pm.

“We also want to invite companies who would like to partner with us in this venture.

“We are grooming stars.”
