Athletes have big goals in their sights

Ulinda athletics club members competed in the ASA (Athletics South Africa) championships in Potchefstroom last Saturday.

KwaThema – Ulinda Athletics Club members competed in the ASA (Athletics South Africa) championships in Potchefstroom last Saturday.

Seventeen-year-old Langelihle Mthethwa won a bronze medal in the 6km event.

“My objective is to break the 3 000m record of 8 minutes 27 seconds, set by Tumi Diphotho,” says Mthethwa.

He also received a gold medal as a team reward, after he and Banele Mkhwanazi made it to the top 10 together.

Even though she did not make it to the finish line this time, Karabo Mhlanga (15) says she wants to focus on qualifying for next year’s Youth Olympics.

“I know it’s a goal I can reach.”

Simphiwe Thombela won silver for cross-country.

Banele Mkhwanazi says he has his eyes set on the African Championships next year.

The team’s coach, Pule Tjaoana, also won silver for the 8km event.

Tjaoana will be running in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (42.2km) over the weekend.

Moeketsi Moagi, Tjaoana’s coach, says he expects him to be in the top 10.

“I know there are 18 000 athletes competing, but I know he will make us proud.”

The club is inviting other athletes to join them.

“The cross-country season is ending, and then we start with track and field in October,” says Moagi.
