Kasi learners challenge math competition

“They have to change their mind set around mathematics because there is a stereotype around the subject that it is a difficult subject".

KwaThema – Six learners from Langaville Primary School participated in the regional Math Olympiad last Friday.

Four of the learners made it to the next round by winning position one, two and three.

They will be participating at district level.

The event will be hosted at Geluksdal Primary School.

The competition was hosted at Strubenville Primary School.

School principal, Khosi Mahlangu, says she is proud of the learners for making it to the next round of the competition.

The learners and teachers worked hard in preparation for the competition and are hoping they will make it to the nationals and be crowned national champions.

“We are trying to encourage the learners from a young age to love the subject.

“They have to change their mind-set concerning mathematics because there is a stereotypical view that the subject is difficult.

“We are calling on parents to encourage their children to take mathematics.

“As a country we need scientists and mathematicians and we can only have them if children take an interest in the subject.

“There is nothing you cannot achieve if you apply your mind to it,” she says.
