Kasi learners compete in spelling bee competition

“We also encourage them to read daily newspapers to broaden their mind-set".

KwaThema- Two learners from Ntokozweni Primary School competed in the spelling bee first additional language (English) competition recently.

They were amongst the top five learners selected out of 52 learners who participated in the competition to proceed to the district level.

Educator Nthabiseng Modiba says she is proud of the learners for making it this far in the competition.

“Thandolwethu Nkosi and Thato Sekopa, who are both in grade six, worked hard through the months learning different words through reading books.

“Through the competition, we are trying to instill a culture of reading in the school.

“We allow them to use the school library during school breaks and after school.

“We also encourage them to read daily newspapers to broaden their mindset,” she says.

Modiba says they are currently working hard and preparing for the next round of the competition.

“We want to be national champions.

“This will teach our learners that one doesn’t have to come from a private school to realise their dreams.

“One only needs to work hard to reach for the dreams,” she says.

Modiba says they are encouraging parents to also teach their children how to read and write.

“This will help us in getting the learners to love reading for fun,” she says.
